Wesak 2010

A Buddhist devotee brought a cage full of Spotted Dove and Peaceful Dove for release this morning. He said he has been doing it for years already.
Hmmmm..... that makes me the odd Buddhist ;-)

Java Sparrow

Bought 3 pairs of Java Sparrow today. From 3 different parents. I have isolated them except a pair that I keep together. Will decide what to do with them later. They are extinct in the wild (in the state of Melaka) as far as I know.

Spent an afternoon sexing, banding and separating them. Found some nice plastic leg band in a local bird shop. Got it free, probably there is no market for leg bands in this part of the world ;-)
Right leg - male, left leg - female. Need to get a log book to record it all down.

Zebra Dove

A new "mute" Zebra DOve I have been keeping since Chinese New Year. He decided to open his mouth or rather his beak last week ;-)
Whew!...... thought I had a mute bird on my hand. Still young though, below 1 year old I was told. Finally patience paid off. Just wanted to try keeping young birds. This one that is yet to be named, has a deformed leg that cannot grab the perch properly.

Seems like only a deformed bird will last longer with me. Something to do with not many people wanting to keep them ;-)
But being a dove, bodily feature is not that important.

The background sound is that of a local Spotted Dove.

Apollo X, a video update

These past few weeks has been hot like hell. Not that I have been there before hahahaha! So, bathing birds is not an option. It has become a necessity...... and the humans too ;-)

Looking for venue to start a bird farm

This venue looks good to relocate most of my birds. Roughly 2 acres, what is left is to agree in the rental & it will be my pilot project at breeding local softbills. Looking at longer term, have to bring it to new level to engage the authorities.

Many important questions need to be answered. But taking it one day at a time, it should unfold itself......

1) is it feasible to repopulate the Straw-headed Bulbul?
2) if possible, where is the safest place? Places that are crawling with bird watchers?
3) how is the behaviour of the SHB? Do they fly far? Huge territory?
4) any cheap telemetry sets I can get to monitor them?
5) can it be profitable?

...... just some questions I have to think through.

Apollo X finishing it's molt

Finally, Apollo X appears to have finished his molt. Next step to build up to breeding form? Or just dump male & female together & call it a day...... Hehehe!
